Domestic Violence Shelter

COMING SOON...God willing!

There are about 7 million Muslims in the USA and 150,000 of them reside in the DFW area.

Annual statistics reveal that 10-33% are victims of domestic abuse, approximately 15,000 to 50,000 Muslim women are at risk of being abused with no place to turn to except the local mosque or one of the mainstream shelters where they may find themselves in an alien environment, due to language, cultural and dietary restrictions. . It is difficult to determine whether Muslim women are victimized more than women in the general population.

What is  more tragic is that there are many who do not come out in the open to report because women, often recent immigrants, face intense family pressure to stay within the abusive relationship and avoid shaming their family.

Strong support and contacts with the local shelters, as well as listening to the plight of victims from numerous Imams (religious leader) at the local mosques, TMWF determined that there is a strong need to establish a "Women's Safe House" which will be open to women of all faiths and which will cater to their specific needs in areas such as the practice of faith, diet, privacy, language, etc.

This shelter will be named  Saayah, which is the "shade" created by the shadow of a tree or building; this would be a safe house for women victims  where women from all faiths can take shelter and will be provided with the basic necessities and counseling until they are ready to move on. The parable of "Saayah" is the shade that a traveler is looking to find on a hot summer day, when she is tired of walking, prays to find a safe "Saayah" under a tree, where the feet can be rested, the strength restored with a little bit of food, a small drink of water and some kind words of encouragement such that she can find the strength and get ready to move on while the Saayah is ready to provide shade to the next traveler that needs a place to catch her breath.
